Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
If I remember correctly the Station fire behavior was quite different, it seemed to hoover in each area and slowly meander and spread out like an unstoppable blob or amoeba. This fire has exploded with lightning speed and advanced like gunpowder. I wonder what's happening in the interior of the burn...

Re: Forgotten place names of the Sierra Madre
Thank you, Sean. That's a great list. Don't forget Mt. Vesuvius for the pyromaniacs at Mt. Lowe. I think the actual identity of Mt. Washburn has yet to be definitively corroborated either way - all brochure maps, contemporary news articles and trail accounts I've found would point to it being furthe...

6:00 AM - Fire in Santa Anita Canyon seen from Mt. Wilson. I think that's white horse peak in the middle of the flames in your image - fire eating its way a bit lower into the east fork santa anita - the archive images show a sudden drop in activity shortly after that image so maybe they dropped so...

Note how the moon presides over the scene...

Yes, appears to be in the upper reaches of the East Fork - Not sure if it's crossed upper clamshell road but might be approaching White Horse Peak - bad news for Chantry and vicinity

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
I stand corrected, embers picking back up with a reflective glow in the sky towards the left/north side and spots visibly further down Monrovia ridge to the right/south - it's like a bomb went off.

Forgotten place names of the Sierra Madre
So the recent thread on "who was Tom Sloan" got me thinking of the ephemeral nature of the people's interactions with the San Gabriel Mountains. It's maybe not unlike Southern California itself in that it seems to completely remake itself and start over again each decade. I think the trail...

On inciweb what do the yellow vs. red marks mean?
At this point, Big Santa Anita Canyon and Monrovia Canyon could be in jeopardy.
Didn't burn in Station Fire, so plenty of fuel.

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
If I'm not mistaken, seems to be ascending Glenn Canyon towards Monrovia Peak as well. For reference, I think the lower part of Cogswell-Rincon-RedBox connector road is visible sloping upwards just right of the dam - looks like the smoke is coming out of the canyons behind that ridge. Looks like it's on the northeast side of Cogswell Reservoir not far from the dam:

We're looking at 5058 from the North? That's Little Bear Canyon in front of it? Yes, my view is from the northwest with little bear canyon in the foreground below revealing the rocky northern side - the most common view of 5058 is from due west as you drive up ACH along the arroyo - or from brown m...

Re: Grizzly Flat Trail
That saddle where upper dark canyon trail meets grizzly flats road is like a case study in invasive total takeover and domination - that stuff is pinching out the trail on both sides - However, I'm always confused between the names Scotch broom and Spanish broom and which one is the greater threat -...

Re: Devil's Canyon Trail - fallen trees
Do you think the downed trees are burn related, weather cycle related or other? Maybe long drought followed by a big winter followed by who knows what... I've been seeing a lot of mature trees come down along the Gabrieleno Trail in the Arroyo, some burned, some not. Also quite a bit of rockfall - m...

This description mentions the hanging cabin and cites John Robinson, maybe he mentions it in his book on san gabriel mines? Not sure if there's any original source documentation to back it up:

Re: Grand Canyon is grand
The main tiers of the falls can be seen rather nicely from a few spots along the sunset trail system on the other side of the canyon. Looks like a pretty dicey climb up the left side from that video! I've climbed into Saucer branch by gaining the right ridge about a hundred yards away from the falls...
