a paper on how to figure out the effect of hills on the length of a hike

I wrote a paper recently on how to figure out the effect of hills on the length of a run or hike. I thought this might be interesting to people on this forum. Paper (open access): https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.04.03.438339v1 Software: http://www.lightandmatter.com/kcals ( open source ...

Re: Plane wreck below the ski hut

He showed me some photos on his phone, but he didn't have a usable map or seemingly any map-reading skills. He had a GPS device with a one-inch screen and low resolution. Looking at some photos online now, I think what he was showing me was a web page with pictures of the 1949 wreck, probably this p...

Run to the Top

Is there anyone here who has done the Baldy Run to the Top and has any practical tips about parking, etc.? I tried the route yesterday as a run, and it was pretty fun. I'm a little leery of signing up because (a) traffic and parking seem like they might be horrible, and (b) they have a policy of no ...

Plane wreck below the ski hut

As I was on my way down the ski hut trail at Baldy yesterday, a guy walked up to me and asked me if I knew where the plane wreck was. I initially thought he was talking about the one up beyond the rim of the bowl, but he showed me a cell phone picture that apparently was taken looking uphill at the ...

Did the damage to the tent look like the kind of thing that would happen if the rapture took place and the person was torn out of the tent and lifted up to the sky?

Re: What’s in your emergency kit?

The couple on the date at the San Jacinto tram had no map and no knowledge of the area, and they just started randomly wandering around. Kind of unsurprising that they ran into trouble. On the way up in the tram, you get a very clear impression of how incredibly steep and rugged the canyons below th...

Things not to bring IMO: -- - The need to purify water supplies in backcountry areas is largely a myth. If an emergency kit is for emergencies, then forget the water purification stuff -- if you're really in trouble, getting giardia is not going to be your main worry. (About half the population alre...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I did Baldy yesterday, Jan. 1, going up the ski hut trail and the bowl, and then down the way the summer trail goes, on the climber's-left side of the bowl under the trees. Monday's storm brought snow all the way down to the low elevations. There is a well-worn track up as far as the ski hut. The bo...

Re: History professor proposes renaming peaks in the San Gabriels

@David R -- I don't think it's valid just to lump everyone together like this. Based on the article, Burnham seems like a really hardcore white supremacist who went around doing awful, violent military stuff. Baden-Powell and Muir seem more like they fall below the threshold for censure, when you t...

Burnham and Baden-Powell do both seem like nasty racists, and Burnham a particularly scary one.

I did Baldy again yesterday by the same route as on Nov. 26. The ice under the trees is 80% gone. I wore running shoes and brought an ax and micros, and that worked.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I did Baldy today, going up Register Ridge and coming down the ski hut trail. There was almost no snow except under the trees on the climber's-left side of the bowl. That area was extremely icy, and the ice was so hard I was slipping around even in microspikes.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

A friend and I did Baldy today via the ski hut trail. The climber's right side of the bowl had almost no snow, and a lot of rock fall, so we went up the snow field on the left side. Conditions were actually pretty enjoyable. The snow was soft, but not deep enough to cause postholing. On the way down...

Re: Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails

Maybe the first thing to do is to eliminate the western braids. The SAR team has had a number of rescues of people ending up in Goode Canyon and missing the ridge altogether on descent. Perhaps that would be the biggest bang for the buck at this point. The route gets such heavy use that I suspect t...

The good news is that I hiked up today and looked at the situation: b.jpg The bad news is that a little later, I tripped and broke my wrist, so I won't be doing any trail maintenance for about 6-8 weeks. a.jpg The two skinny rectangles in the drawing are two of the brown posts, about 1/2 and 3/4 of ...

@JeffH, I'm down if you want to get together and work on this as a weekend project. Some weekends I could do are Aug 15-16 (this coming weekend), Aug 29-30, or Sep. 12-13. I think if there are two guys carrying a log up a steep slope, huffing and puffing, then it's not really going to work to wear m...

Re: Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails

That section of trail is hopeless. Going back 15 years the trail was much more defined and would contour to the west side and then go up. I now can no longer tell the accurate route especially on the lower section coming down. People have moved further and further over to the east and created more ...

Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails

The Ski Hut trail is in general a super scenic way to do Baldy, and it takes us through an area that mostly seems to me like it's in good shape environmentally and hasn't seen the kind of human impact that you see near the Notch. However, there are some sections of the trail, along the climber's-lef...

Re: permits, adventure passes

I've only been seeing the rest stop on Mt Baldy Rd (below Icehouse Canyon) in the dark recently, so I hadn't noticed until this week, but (a) there's a notice from April saying it's closed because of the pandemic, and (b) there's a padlock on the outer door, which had been broken off. So it looks to...

Re: permits, adventure passes

I suspect part of the problem at Manker is the number of people there nearly every day. Yeah, they used to have the two plastic portapotties. Doesn't the new outhouse only have a single throne? Vivian Creek probably has half the people, and they have two or three portapotties plus two different bat...

Re: permits, adventure passes

So what's the difference? Are there far fewer visitors at Vivian Creek? Do the facilities get more attention? Both? Beats me. It may have to do with things like how the two two different national forests set up the details of their contracts with their contractors. It was true even before the epide...

I've been to Baldy and San G a few times recently. Quite a contrast. There are clean portapotties at Vivian Creek/Big Falls, with toilet paper. On my latest beach trip here in Cali, I wanted in on some cove action, so I first went to Pt Lobos. 99.999999% love the place that is 50% developed parking lots. I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula.
